Are we recreating the Caliphate?
This thought came to me when I saw the headlines on the Iraqi constitution draft invoking Islamic law as the final touchstone for that society's secular law: Is the "War against Terrorism," or now the "Global struggle against violent extremism (not Islamic, of course, we wouldn't say that!)," recreating the Caliphate? Let's see. Iran is an Islamic state; Afghanistan is an Islamic state (although is Sharia the "touchstone" in their constitution? I'm not certain); Iraq will -- if their constitution contains the aforementioned provision -- be an Islamic state; Egypt, if elections were held today, might well come out of those elections as an Islamic state, and what about the rest of North Africa? And if the "violent extremists" (whoever THAT is) bombed Madrid again might Spain vote to adopt Sharia just to avoid conflict?
What are we doing? Is there a plan to avoid this outcome?
